We are often asked where the name, 'Wood-n-Chick' came
from. The 'Wood' part is simple, our furniture is made
entirely from wood products. The 'Chick' came about
because we had owned a chicken farm, a broiler operation.
Bill put the two together and came up with Wood-n-Chick
Furniture.
Since broiler farming left much free time for Bill, he started
making furniture as a hobby. His work station was a small
partition of one of his chicken barns. With basic tools and little knowledge of the trade, his first pieces were made for his wife, Tilda, in their home. Over the years he began to make furniture for other family
members, then for friends and, before long, his hobby had
turned itself into a nice little business. For many years he
did custom work only, making all sorts of furniture ranging
from coffee tables to bedroom sets. Each piece was made
for a specific person with specific measurements and
requirements, which lead to many interesting designs.
In July of 1990, Bill moved his farming operation and
furniture endeavour to Armstrong, B.C. where he continued
to make furniture and learn much more about his developing
trade. After selling his broiler farm in 1993, Bill started making furniture full time. His talent for making furniture grew and the idea of a retail outlet became prominent. Finally, in June of 2002, a retail outlet called Wood-n-Chick Furniture opened in the town of Armstrong. The store, run by Bill and his family, boasted high quality handcrafted furniture. After one year of operation it was evident that, although the community wanted the furniture, the Armstrong area could not support a store with high end furniture. Looking through sales, demand and its own capabilities, the management team decided to close the store front and sell the high quality furniture directly from the home-based factory.
